Incremental Homogenization – HadCRUT4 to HadCRUT5

CSS-25 Homogenization is the only significant tool that the Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming (CAGW) alarmists have left in their “scientific” arsenal. A tool that is quickly becoming harder to justify. The economic problems associated with the seemingly endless, unnecessary green initiatives are being laid out in spectacular fashion as we move quickly and further into the severe energy and food crises the world has just begun to experience. The CAGW alarmist science has also taken some serious hits (justifiably so), with the IPCC’s self admission that the models they use to justify their position, run too hot and the “world will end” RCP8.5 emission scenario is highly implausible. Several peer reviewed papers were published in the last couple of years that show the folly of the CAGW alarmists’ position. All that science is outlined in my OPS-55 – The State of Climate Science post. This post just documents the Hadley Center’s transition from HadCRUT4 to HadCRUT5 surface temperature anomalies. One more step that modifies measured temperatures to conform to the CAGW alarmist narrative. Rather than following the Scientific Method of adjusting the hypothesis/theory to conform to the data. But we are dealing with a narrative here, not a theory or a hypothesis.

The adjustments from HadCRUT4 to HadCRUT5 essentially reduced the HadCRUT4 temperature anomalies before June 1973 (on average 0.037 °C) and increased HadCRUT4 temperature anomalies since that time (on average 0.07 °C). Those are not huge adjustments on their own, but they are notable, and they are layered on top of the much more prominent individual station homogenization. Remember, the individual station homogenization has magically wiped the Dirty Thirties out of existence. That is roughly 0.65 °C (or more) of homogenization based on the HadCRUT5 data since temperatures were higher in the 1930s. You can argue that the Dirty Thirties were not global, but the heat covered a significant portion of the planet. So, let us focus on the US. The 1930’s measured temperatures were unquestionably higher than today. Yet the 1930’s temperatures are a fraction of the “official” temperatures? The US temperatures have been subjected to significant homogenization. Measured Temperatures have been adjusted down by over 1 °F prior to 1960 and measured temperatures post-2000 have been adjusted up by as much as 1.5 °F. That is a total homogenization of 2.5 °F (1.4 °C or more). Strange, that the US homogenization is more than the IPCC’s official global temperature increase (1.07 °C). The homogenization required to keep the CAGW narrative on life support is increasing exponentially (as shown in CSS-8 and OPS-58). Even on this minor HadCRUT4 to HadCRUT5 “correction”, the temperature manipulation has accelerated significantly. At the turn of the century, the HadCRUT4 to HadCRUT5 adjustment accelerated to a rate of 0.61 °C/century. You must give the CAGW alarmists some credit. After all, there is no better way to show that temperatures are increasing than adjusting older measured temperatures down and adjusting the more recent measured temperatures up. There may however be less fraudulent ways.
